My latest piece of bespoke plywood furniture to leave the workshop is this beautiful birch plywood sideboard, designed for a family and their new modern home in Cornwall.
The sideboard measures 160cm wide, 60cm tall and 40cm deep, and features two soft close drawers, adjustable shelves and a hinged door compartment. A custom geometric pattern was chosen by the customer and etched onto the drawers that gives the unit a lovely subtle detail and texture. Recessed pull handles were cut out of the drawer and cupboard fronts and backed by matching plywood. Blum Movento soft close drawer runners and hinges were used for those touches of finesse. Who doesn’t love a soft close! To finish off, two coats of Osmo Oil was applied to protect the wood.
The design process: As this was a bespoke build, the process started with an initial conversation with the customer about sizes, materials, uses, patterns and colour. Once i had this information i presented initial design sketches, which are a great way for the customer to visualise their ideas. It brings the ideas to life and gives a really good feel for the finished product.
After some discussion and last tweaks, the finished design was signed off by the customer and i got started on the best bit, the build! I love making bespoke plywood furniture, as every piece is so unique to the customer and i think there is something very special about having furniture built for you. There is thought, care and attention put into every piece that i make that you just dont get from off the shelf furniture.
