Brief I was asked by my customer to design and build a bespoke bathroom storage cabinet to house their linen. My customer had recently moved into a new apartment in London, and wanted something stylish and contemporary to match their new bathrooms design scheme.
Design Process Desired measurements were given and a photo of the bathroom this cabinet was supplied, to give me a good understanding of the space and colour scheme. My design process starts with a quick few sketches to show the client different possible configurations for the unit before agreeing a direction and moving onto the next step.
3D Model Design The next stage is to create the proposed design in Sketchup, which is a 3D design software used to create 3D models. This is such a great tool for both me and the customer, as it allows you to see the design in full three dimensional form. These are sent to the client so they can really visualise what their bespoke furniture is going to look like finished!
Materials
18mm Birch plywood was used for the main carcass of the cabinet, as the lovely pale wood fits nicely with the existing colour scheme and keeps a large unit still looking ‘light’. An Ice cream coloured laminate was used on the door and upper shelves which complements so well with the birch.
For the door, a handleless Blum® TipOn ‘push to open’ mechanism was used to keep the design looking as clean as possible. Inside the lower compartment is an adjustable shelf for practical hidden storage.
My latest build is a modern record cabinet with an abstract design inspired by the grooves on a vinyl record. Behind the beautiful grooved doors there is storage for approximately 140 LPs and additional hifi equipment. Made using the very innovate material Valchromat®, the unique construction subtly reveals the wood fibres for a natural and …
