Brief I was asked by my customer to design and build a bespoke plywood open bookcase for their home in London. This was the second piece of plywood furniture that i have made for this customer and it was to sit along side an oak plywood sideboard that i made last year. The open bookcase measures 2.2m x 42cm deep and 90cm wide.
Design Process My design process starts with a quick few sketches to show the client different possible configurations for the unit before agreeing a direction and moving onto the next step.
3D Model Design The next stage was to create the proposed design in Sketchup, which is a 3D design software used to create 3D models. This is such a great tool for both me and the customer, as it allows you to see the design in full three dimensional form and discuss and tweaks or amends. These were sent to the client so they can really visualise what their bespoke furniture is going to look like finished!
Materials / Build
19mm Oak plywood was used for the main carcass of the open bookcase to match the existing oak sideboard that i made. A white laminate was used on the doors and a modern geometric pattern was applied to the laminate across all doors which looks really striking. The pattern was carefully positioned to appear as a complete pattern across all doors.
For the doors, i used Blum® TipOn ‘push to open’ mechanism to keep the bookcase looking as clean as possible. Blum 110º inset spring free hinges were used in conjunction with the push to open doors.
