Brief I was approached by my customer to build a bespoke plywood bathroom cabinet. The brief was for the piece to wrap around an existing mirrored bathroom cabinet and provide extra storage. I am very please with the outcome and how it has transformed the mirror into a focal point of the bathroom.
Design Process Initially the customer wanted two individual shelves to sit alongside the mirror, but after discussions we ended up creating a ‘frame’ that would sit around the existing mirror and hide the unsightly top and bottom panels of the cabinet. I also added a routed channel underneath the bottom shelf for an LED light strip to be installed.
3D Sketchup Model As with all my bespoke plywood furniture projects, i first created the design in the 3D building programme Sketchup, which enables you see the piece in full three dimensional form. It is a great tool for showing customers and even has an augmented reality feature to see it in situ via your mobile phone screen.
Materials / Build
My customer decided to have the bespoke bathroom cabinet made from cherry plywood, which has a beautiful warm colour and matched the proposed bathroom decor. As this piece is going in a bathroom setting, lacquer was applied to protect it from water spills and splashes.
