The last week before Christmas i was busier than one of Santa’s elves, with a handful of projects being finalised and sent out before the holidays.
The pick of the bunch was this bespoke black Valchromat TV cabinet for a customer in London. This was the first time i had used Valchromat, and i cant wait to use it again on future projects.
Valchromat, for those who haven’t heard of it is a high density sheet material made of wood fibres, that are dyed with organic colouring agents to create a truly unique material to work with. Working with it is a pleasure and it cuts beautifully and creates crisp cuts. It did however, leave my workshop looking like a coal mine after it was finished, but on reflection it was definitely worth the mess!
Black Valchromat TV Cabinet
The cabinet was designed and made-to-measure for a front room alcove, and featured sliding door storage with an adjustable shelf compartment for AV equipment. The 19mm Valchromat, dyed throughout enabled me to create lovely subtle recessed door handles that were finished off with a small chamfer. Dowel legs were cut and stained to match, using two coats of Black Rubio Monocoat Pre Colour. Two coats of Osmo Poly-X Clear oil were applied to protect the unit and really bring out the richness of the black.
I absolutely love the design, and the crispness that the Valchromat adds. Brass shelf pins were also used, which really pop against the black Valchromat.
This was a great project to finish the year. I cant wait to use Valchromat in future designs.
